Before Meeting a Custom Home Builder – 4 Things To-Do

BACK TO BLOG

We understand, finding that perfect home builder can be tough. One home builder offers one thing while the other offers another. It can be difficult choosing that perfect builder, and trusting that builder to create and build that dream home you’ve been envisioning and creating Pinterest boards about. That’s why it’s important to meet with a narrowed list of builders that meet most of your qualifications, and to determine who you are the most comfortable with. However, before meeting with the builders, you’ve narrowed down; you should prepare and do a little research. Below are four different things that will help make the meetings a little easier.

4 Tips to Make Your Build Meeting Easier

1. Research local builder

Before you meet with a builder it’s important to do a little research on the builder. Check out their website and view their past work and floor plans. Visit a model home that is open on the weekends, and talk to a representative from the company. Go into the model home prepared to point out what specific features you would like to see in your new home.

2. Ask Questions

We get it, meeting with a home builder can be very overwhelming. A ton of information is being thrown at you about floorplans and options, so it can be hard to wrap everything together. This is why questions are so important! If you’re concerned with efficiency, ask the builder how they compare with other builders when it comes to building energy efficient homes, and where the HERS Ratings rank for their homes. If price is your concern, see how long it takes for an estimate to be put together, with a breakdown of all costs associated with the home. While, if sustainability is a concern, ask what type of materials are being used to construct the home. The more you know, the more comfortable you’ll be choosing your builder

3. Show and Tell

If you’ve gotten multiple Pinterest boards and Houzz albums, it’s time to show them! Bringing these pictures to show the builder will allow the builder to get a sense of what your dream home looks like. When a builder has a good sense of what you’re wanting in your dream home, a better estimate will be delivered. You will also have a better idea if the builder, you’re meeting with, is capable of sharing your vision.

4. Ask to take a tour!

Most builders have model homes or recently completed homes that are available to walk through and take tours of. Although beautiful photos in portfolios may be appealing, it is essential to see the builder’s craftsmanship in person before moving forward.

Building a custom home is an exciting process. Like any big decision in life, it’s helpful to consider options. Meet with several builders before you make your final decision. This will help you determine both what you want and need in a builder.
